Turkish students as well as foreign students wishing to apply to undergraduate degree programs taught in English at Turkish universities must meet English language proficiency requirements either by taking the TOEFL or IELTS exams or by sitting for English language proficiency exams administered locally by the university.

However, most Turkish students find it more convenient to sit for the university English placement and proficiency exams.

While some universities have just one proficiency exam, other universities initially use a first-stage placement exam to screen students that can sit for the second-stage proficiency exam.

Placement and proficiency exams test the following academic English language skills:

  • Use of English / Grammar (Fill in the blank. MCQs)

  • Reading (Fill in the blanks, MCQs)

  • Listening (Fill in the blank, MCQs)

    • Single speaking narrative (Ex: a classroom lecture)

    • Two or more speakers short casual conversations

    • Medium to longer length conversations

    • Medium to longer length academic lectures

  • Writing

    • Cause / Effect Essays

    • For / Against Essays
