The SAT is NOT an English or Math test.
The SAT is a test of aptitude, the ability to apply learned concepts, skills, techniques, and methods strategically to answer questions within a limited amount of time.
THE BETTER YOUR STRATEGY, THE BETTER YOUR CHANCES OF OBTAINING A HIGHER SCORE.
For example, the problems on the math section of the SAT generally do not require operations more complex than addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. However, the problems and questions are framed in challenging ways and require you to quickly develop an understanding of context, parameters, and requirements. Only then can you develop the right strategy to solve the problem. In addition, a lot of candidates resolve to simpler, more mechanical problem-solving approaches which can take considerably longer and increase risk of error.
A good strategy is one that:
-
minimizes risk
-
simplifies process and solution
-
is generally, but not always, the fastest
The SAT is not administered every month. Therefore it is critical that your strategy to prepare and succeed must take into consideration when you can sit for the test. This is also crucial when sending test scores to universities in order to make sure that your scores reach them in time to evaluate your admission application fully and to consider you for any scholarships that you may be eligible for. The SAT test is offered in the following months:
-
MAR
-
MAY
-
JUN
-
AUG
-
OCT
-
NOV
-
DEC
Registering for the SAT can be a bit frustrating, so its best to prepare correctly. Here are some tips:
-
Takes about 30 minutes
-
Make sure the photo on your identification document looks like the photo you submit during the online registration. Seriously.
-
File formats: .jpg, .png.
-
Avoid photos with any glasses. Also, avoid photos with hats. Click here for more information from CollegeBoard about SAT photo requirements.
-
-
You must be very careful when entering your details (ex: name, date of birth, nationality, etc.) since this information will be used
-
to confirm your identity on test day at the testing center
-
sent to universities when reporting your test scores.
-
-
The spelling of your name on your identification document must match the spelling you enter during your registration or you wont be allowed to sit for the test.
The SAT is now digital AND adaptive, using a multistage adaptive testing model. According to the CollegeBoard:
"each test section (Reading and Writing, Math) is divided into two stages, called modules. Students answer a set of questions in the first module before moving on to the next. The questions in the second module are configured based on performance in the first module. This means that the test “adapts” to show questions that are more appropriate to a student’s performance level."
-
What’s Staying the Same?
-
Still measuring the knowledge and skills that matter most for universities.
-
Still scored on a 1600 scale.
-
Still administering in schools or test centers with a proctor present (not at home). Test centers will continue to be open to all students, not just those enrolled in that school.
-
Still offering access to free, world-class practice resources.
-
Still supporting all students, including those who need accommodations on test day.
-
What’s Changing?
-
You’ll take the SAT on a laptop or tablet.
-
You’ll take a shorter test, about 2 hours instead of 3.
-
You’ll have shorter reading passages instead of a few long texts.
-
You’ll be allowed to use your calculator on the entire math section and there’s a calculator built right into the digital testing application.
-
The digital SAT employs the multistage adaptive testing (MST) model. More on that later.
